As well-wishers, the private sector, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), development agencies and the government are providing support to people who have been affected by Cyclone Freddy which hit Malawi on 12 March 2023 and left a trail of devastation in 8 districts across the southern region of Malawi.
Thus, YONECO has embarked on provision of Psychological First Aid (PFA) support to the people who have survived the disastrous impact of the cyclone. The PFA sessions are being conducted to provide mental health assistance to those that have been exposed to stressors due to the disaster.
on 21st March 2023, YONECO conducted a PFA session at St Augustine 2 evacuation camp. A total of18 people attended the session, of which 16 were female and 2 were male.
As of 21 march 2023, the cyclone induced floods claimed 507 lives, leaving 1,332 people injured, 537 people missing and 553,614 people displaced from their homes. So far, 543 camps have been set up to accommodate people who have been displaced.
Despite all the concerted efforts by various stakeholders, to alleviate the suffering, there is still more that has to be done as many people in the affected areas are in dire need of food, clothes, beddings, and various sanitation facilities.
